Transcontinental race 2017 – complete kit list

Here we go again. New year, new Transcontinental race route and a few changes in the kit. If you are here then you probably have already read 2016, 2015 and 2014 versions. I’ll refer to them every now and then. I mainly write these to remember what worked and what didn’t. Also to remember what to pack.

Some more photos in Flickr album, if you are interested.

A big surprise. A new frame! A long story short. My Orbea Onix road bikes bottom bracket shell was broken and frame was replaced under warrantry. Hence I got a new Avant frame and had the excuse to switch to compact cranks and medium cage rear derailleur that are better fit for long distances than standard road gearings. I probably would’ve ridden with my Onix earlier, but Campagnolo compact cranks for bottom bracket that is not a pile of garbage (Power/Ultra torque) are very hard to find and now that the frame anyways had a pile of garbage bottom bracket shell (a PF86) I chose Ultegra compacts. SON deluxe front dynamo, Power tap G3 and Continental 25 mm tires. Almost all parts, except brakes and bags, are now identical to my last year’s setting. Riding position is a few centimeters more upright so I might spend more time on aerobars.

P7230002

Fear of the dark is still here. Pretty much like last year. Iq-x turned back to Luxos B because bike just looks better with 2 identical lights. Lupine Piko R is still there. It was also replaced under warrantry after last year’s torrential rain in Austria soaked the old one.

GoPro Session is still there. There hasn’t been any reason to upgrade. I now have a helmet mount with KlickFix adapter so I might take a few more helmet videos.

P7230003

Makeshift mount for dynamo Secula light in the rear and Solas to blind anything or anyone looking at me from behind.

As there are no rack mounts in the frame I use a bit lighter and smaller Carradice bag. Also heavy tools were moved to new more spacious frame bag. Also Alpkit pouch is still under the saddle.

P7230012

I got new frame bags that were better fit for new frame. Missgrape frame and top tube bags have proven to be ok. Frame bag is big enough for tools and chargers. I was a bit vary of zipper in top tube bag, but I’ve gotten used to it. It is much better fit than my old Xtreme top tube bag.

P7230011

I added Apidura food pouches to dashboard. Old Tunturi frame is a bit too small for the food pouches. I’ll be using Edge 1000 and Edge 820 for navigation. Polar V800 shall be the main recorder now that they finally got power saving gps mode that lasts almost a day with one charge. I just hope their sync isn’t buggy when there is poor cellular coverage. I’ve never recorded all days of a Transcontinental race (4) so far. We’ll see how it goes this time.

P7230010

I had to move Piko light and Edge remotes after fitting the food pouches. Remotes are now index finger operated and easier to access from aero position. Initially they seem to work really well, but I don’t know how it goes after hands and wrists are worn out.

P7230007

P7230006

I’ll be wearing mostly the same kit as last year. S-works shoe laces are now serviced so I hopefully don’t have to buy a new pair of shoes 5 hours before start. Randonneurs Finland jersey is identical to Prologi’s that I used last year. Cimacoppi merino long sleeve jersey is good for all weather. Same old shorts, socks and helmet. New, but identical, gloves and hopefully a new cap. 🙂

P7231058

Stuff in pockets are Sony Compact X phone and wallet on left, mussette on middle and camera on right. I try to carry only light objects in merino jersey’s pockets nowadays. Also passport, and later brevet card, in zipper pocket. Camera in photo is the old TG-3. I’m using Olympus TG-5 this year.

P7231060

In the saddle bag I have rest of the clothes. I used to have them in frame bag, but I try to keep saddle bag light so I put clothes there instead. A bit slower to take out and no access while riding, but after putting my Randonneurs Finland jacket I can stuff everything in my pockets so I shouldn’t need to access the bag more than once per night.

Merino buff, toe warmers, SealSkinz gloves, knee warmers and a warmer jacket than last year. I also have 2nd pair of socks and shorts.

P7231064

Some neccessities include toothbrush and toothpaste, razor and deodorant. A small rag for cleaning hands and few pieces of toilet paper. Shampoo is used to was both me and my clothes. I try to switch shorts once per day and hopefully find place to wash the other pair sometime during the day. These are in the saddle bag.

P7231067

In the frame bag I have a waterproof pouch for chargers. The batteries are here just for show as they are wherever they are needed at the time. Topeak mobile power, Tespack power bank and 2nd Lupine battery.

2x 2 port usb wall chargers, 2x micro-usb and a usb-c cable for phone.

P7231062

Also in frame bag are the ”emergency items”. 2 power bar gels for food and a space blanket. Also a 2nd phone. I used both phones equally last year, but this year I try to keep one juiced up and have the other just for emergencies. Some small-but-priceless bits include a sim adapter for micro to nano, sd card with maps, usb micro-to-c adapter and usb-c to usb adapter. This last adapter is only way I can move maps and routes to Edge 820 in case Edge 1000 fails. Ridiculous, but thats the way shit works nowadays.

P7231057

Tools are pretty much like last year. They are in the frame bag. Main difference is that I only have one pump, my other Lezyne pump is broken beyond repair I suppose, but instead I have a replacement hose and a 2nd auto-presta adapter.

I don’t yet have a derailleur hanger, but I’m trying to find one before start.

  • pump
  • patches
  • spare outer tire
  • 2 tubes
  • tire levers
  • PowerTap opener
  • dynamo cable connectors
  • multitool (not the one in photo, a Victorinox instead with scissors)
  • another multitool with T8 bit for pedals
  • spare cleat
  • spare spring for pedal
  • spokes, nipples and spoke tool
  • brake and shifter cables
  • spare Garmin mount
  • Boa cable and tool for shoes
  • GoPro screw
  • oil and rag
  • Cr2032 and lithium aaa batteries (for Spot)

P7231056

Spokes are inside the saddlebag.

P7231059

In the other food pouch I have handsfree, headset and spork. Handsfree bag can also be used for cleaning glasses and camera lenses.

P7231071

The other food pouch is for cables and bits needed while cycling. Having access to these and keeping track of what is where is one of my biggest mental burdens while riding. Especially not losing the Luxos U usb cable.

There is Lupine battery usb charging adapter, Lupine usb out adapter, Polar V800 charging cable, 2 micro-usb cables and the famour Luxos U usb cable.

P7231063

Then there is the Alpkit bag under the saddle that has bubble wrap matress for sleeping and a bag for casual shorts to be used during hotel stops.

P7231069

In the right side pocket of saddle bag are Mavic reflective vest. A friend sold me his almost unused vest, because he converted to Rapha after buying it. Vizion vest is by far the best in the category that I’ve ever used. Small details make a big difference when you wear it day after day. Also a package bag to carry food during long nights without known services. Finally a Gorilla pod for photography.

P7231068

In the left pocket of saddle bag are finally the Assos chammy cream, 50 sun screen, Petzl tikka 2 xp headlight and GoPro helmet mount.

randonneurs.fi -sivusto täyttää viisi vuotta

Vuodet ovat viereineet ja www.randonneurs.fi -sivuston rekisteröinnistä on kulunut jo viisi vuotta. Sivuille on koottu tietoa randonneur-pyöräilystä.

Viime vuonna pisimmät matkat olivat yli 300 km.

Talvipäivänseisaus-pyöräily ajetaan nyt neljättä kertaa. Maalipaikkoina ovat Tampeella hotelli Ilves ja Oulussa hotelli Eden.

Transcontinental race 2016 – complete kit list

(Yet) Another year and another Transcontinental race. If you’ve already been following my past Transcontinentals, you’ve probably read my 2015 kit list (or 2014?). I will point out some changes as I explain my equipment for this year.

For more photos, go check the Flickr album.

And here is the same old frankenbike. A hybrid 2003-2007, Shimano 105 ”cyclocross” 2007-2009 and 2009- Campagnolo and whatever you can fit in. Parts are pretty much identical to last year. Durano 25 mm tires, PowerTap G3 rear hub and Son Delux dynamo front hub. Deluxe was serviced last winter, new chainrings were installed, had to carve one size bigger threads for frame rack mounts and rear shifters g-springs replaced. Stuff that has to be done to old and mortal bike components. I broke a Look Blade pedal last year in Italy and another this year in Finland, but I’m still using them. If they fail me for 3rd time in 2 years I’ll consider some other design. Also I added 3 mm padding to aerobars and moved them a bit outwards.

P7200018

My fear of the dark hasn’t gone anywhere. This year’s setup is Busch&Muller Luxos Iq-x and Luxos U (usb charger) dynamo lights. The combination has been surprisingly good. I can even use the Iq-x daylight and charge at the same time. Something that needed constant 30+ km/h with Luxos B.

Old MyTinySun was replaced with Lupine Piko R. They finally released the ”R” of Piko, which means I now have a thumb remote for my extra front light. Which is great compared to Folkslight that was stubbornly hard to turn on/off.

Also GoPro 3+ made room for GoPro Session. Worse video quality, but ease of use, no need for extra batteries, waterproof design and fast helmet mountability made it a nobrainer.

P7200022

More of the gadgets. I (almost) got rid of mini-usb cables. GoPro 3, Garmin 810 and MyTinySun Folkslight all used mini. Somehow it was turn to a world of difference when my 810’s mini-connector was damaged. As I was looking for replacement, a Edge 1000, I eventually replaced all other mini-usb devices. Under left pad is Edge remote and under right pad is Piko remote.

P7200024

The Piko R runs on external batteries that can also be used as power banks. Somehow I ended up with a single ”mission critical” usb connector for them. I got a ”food pouch” for storing the Lupine usb charge plug and Luxos U usb charge cable. Just so that its always easy to check that I didn’t forget them somewhere. 🙂

Last year I had a Polar V800 (not pictured) in handlebar. The device had a broken charging connector and it was replaced. I was looking forward to use a bluetooth speed sensor, but only one available is the Wahoo RPM speed (VeloComputer may exist, but I’ve never seen one being used) and none could confirm if it works with V800 or not. I will have the V800 in my wrist this time to better track my sleep and breaks. However I’m worried I’ll get sunburns in wrist as it will wear off sun lution from area near watch. And also get absolutely filthy from the sun lotion, dust and sweat.

P7200025

This photo is simply cableporn. This time I don’t have to remove the connectors from Luxos U itself as it has full length cable attached to it. Also Iq-x has a full length cable attached. So as long as dynamo and either light works I can use that light until I find a place to check whats wrong.

P7200030

The rear is exactly as it was. Carradice bag and rack. B&M Secula dynamo light for visibility and Niterider Solas usb light for blinding anyone behind me. Alpkit 2-end equipment bag mounted below the Carradice.

P7200027

Next the ”what are you wearing” section. Same helmet, same socks, new cap (and number!), same gloves, same shorts and same shoes. Jersey however is new and has yet to prove its worthiness. Its a long sleeve loose fit wool jersey so I could also drop my arm warmers from list. I was very pleased with the jersey during Vologda-Onego-Ladoga 1200 km brevet when temperature was around 33 celcius. It felt better than a ”technical” jersey. Yet I have no idea how its going to be in a in extreme heat and mountain climbs.

Gloves are coming to end of their life cycle, but they should last this year. I think 3 years is plenty for something that takes suchs a heavy beating. Also I replaced all the paddings of my helmet(/pillow).

P7220046

Pockets are to hold wallet and spare phone on left, chargers/cables and main mobile on the middle, Tg 3 camera (used to take these photos) on right and finally brevet card and passport in zipper pocket.

P7210035

Food pouch in front will hold a power bank, charging cables and parts, spork and handsfree.

P7220049

In saddle bag’s left pocket are Petzl Tikka 2 xp helmet light, Leatherman, Lupine battery, another power bank and camera pod.

P7210043

In Carradice main compartment are spare clothes. Pair of shorts, socks and a reflective vest.

P7210037

Still in the main compartment is spare navigator, little emergency food and yet another power bank. One of my 4 micro-usb cables is equiped with a micro-to-mini plug so I can charge 810 if needed. If there is heavy rain for several days I might need to use the 810 as 1000 can’t be charged while its raining. Otherwise I should never have to open this bag.

P7210044

The tool bag is also in there

  • 2 pumps
  • patches
  • spare outer tire
  • 2 tubes
  • tire levers
  • PowerTap opeer
  • dynamo cable connectors
  • multitool
  • another multitool with some odd pieces, T8 (for pedals), T30 (rear derailler)
  • spare cleat
  • spare spring for pedal
  • spokes, nipples and spoke tool
  • brake and shifter cables
  • spare Garmin mount
  • Boa cable and tool for shoes
  • GoPro screw
  • derailler hanger (for 1st time ever, breaking one has been popular this year)
  • oil and rag
  • Cr2032 and lithium aaa batteries (for Spot)

P7210031

The Carradice right pocket has musette, packable backpack, sun lotion and Assos chamois cream. I have the same Sea-to-Summit packable backpack as I had in 2014. I lost it and found it over a year later. Last year’s Paris-Brest-Paris was first time I used musette actively. I have to say I really liked it. It should allow certain foods, mostly bread and fruits, be accessible while riding.

P7210038

In the equipment bag are hygiene stuff, emergency blanket, scissors and … a Olympus Tg-3 charging cable. The camera’s battery last several days so I only need to charge it during longer hotel stops.

P7210041

Also in the equipment bag are the ”camping” equipment and ”civilian” clothes. For sleeping I have hip-to-shoulder cut roll of bubble wrap and bag with shorts is typically used as pillow.

P7220050

Last, but not least, is the frame bag with ”always needed” spare cloths. Leg warmers, wool buff, toe warmers, SealSkinz long gloves and a wind-/waterproof jacket. I hope the Gamex+wool jersey will be enough for even the coldest Alp downhills.

P7210036
